High school softball: Lakeside 7th-inning rally comes up just short in second round of playoffs

by Russell Hedges

The No. 11 seed Lakeside Lady Warriors dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to No. 6 Merryville in the second round of the non-select Division IV playoffs Tuesday in Merryville.

Lakeside trailed 3-0 after six innings then almost came back in the top of the seventh.

Mackenzie McCoy’s one-out RBI-double got the Lady Warriors on the board. Then back-to-back singles by Rainie Hughes and Raleah Harris cut the lead to 3-2 with runners at first and second.

But Merryville’s Leighlah Pruitt induced a popout and groundout to end the game.

Lakeside finished with six hits. McKenna Chreene had a double. Emily Jones and Teal Austin had singles.

Hallie Sutton allowed just four hits and one earned run in six innings. She struck out eight and walked two.

Lakeside closed its first season under Head Coach Brittany Frazier Smith 16-17. Merryville improved to 18-5.

Lakeside’s loss leaves Minden as the only parish team left in the playoffs.

The No. 13 seed Lady Tiders (18-11) visit No. 4 North Vermilion (22-6) in a non-select Division II second-round game Wednesday at 4:30.
