Jerry L. Strickland

by Will Phillips

Graveside service for Jerry L. Strickland will be held Saturday, August 22, 2020, at 10:30 a.m. at Fellowship Cemetery in Dubberly, Louisiana under the direction of Rose-Neath Funeral Home in Minden, Louisiana. Marc Pittman and Shane Graham will officiate.

Jerry was born June 11, 1937, in Shreveport, Louisiana, and entered into rest August 17, 2020, in Shreveport, Louisiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewey and Jewell Strickland; wife, Juanita Pittman Strickland; sister, Maxine Mothershed, and brother, Benny Strickland.

He is survived by his daughter, Susan Strickland Graham and husband Shane; special friend, Leatha Morris and numerous sisters and brothers-in-laws; special nephew, Mike Strickland, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jerry had many interests, and looked forward to the day he and Juanita could retire and travel with their pups. For years he and Juanita lived the good life with Jerry driving their RV by day and writing his beloved music at night.  They laughed, they fished and made many friends along the way. They became active in Good Sams and helped to raise funds for hearing impaired dogs. Sadly, Juanita did not live long enough to fully enjoy their retirement and died much too soon.

As proof we all get second chances, Jerry was able to spend his last few years with Leatha Morris. Outclassed again, he would claim not believing his good fortune in finding her. True statement.

Jerry made a name for himself among the music industry as a lyricist, composing lyrics for R & B and in his later years, country. He spent many evenings with his notepad…muttering to himself until he got the words just right.  He could talk music for hours and loved to tell stories of his work with performers and other writers.

Anyone who knew Jerry knows there was one other thing he loved to brag about…Susan and her husband Shane.  Any conversation with Jerry would inevitably lead to Susan and Shane and the life they have embraced and the people they have become.  He was so very proud.
