Jindal wants to arm National Guard to protect military sites

BATON ROUGE— Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal is directing the state National Guard to arm soldiers as needed to protect local military installations.

Jindal announced the decision in a news release Friday. He took action in response to Thursday’s shootings at military sites in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

In his proclamation, Jindal says the adjutant general should “identify and arm certain Guard personnel currently on state active duty … as reasonably necessary to preserve the lives, property, and security of themselves and other persons subject to threat of an attack as occurred this week in Chattanooga, Tennessee.”

Jindal also ordered that flags at the Capitol and all public buildings fly at half-staff until July 24 in remembrance of the victims of the Chattanooga attack.
