I want to take this opportunity to thank those who have called, written, sent emails, and, have shared condolences in the loss of our Executive Director, Johnny Johnson.
I know he would have been humbled and appreciative for all the heartfelt messages. He was a good man, and there were so many he helped and assisted while here at the Webster Parish Council on Aging. He will be missed, so very much.
Grief is a strange thing. And if we live long enough, we meet it “head on,” as my Grandma used to say.
“Grief is the personal and complex response to loss, affecting emotions, thoughts, behaviors, and physical well-being. It is a deeply personal process, and people may experience a wide range of emotions, including sadness, anger, fear, numbness, or even relief. (Canadian Mental Health Association)
And, it is the natural process, we all have to endure when we lose a spouse, a family member or a close friend. As a senior adult, I have lost so many people in my own life, and it is never easy, it is always heartbreaking and extremely emotional, but there are some things, that we can do, to help us navigate grief:
- “Connect with caring and supportive people. This might include loved ones, neighbors, and co-workers. It could also include a bereavement support group or community organization.
- Give yourself enough time. Everyone reacts differently to a loss and there is no normal grieving period.
- Let yourself feel sadness, anger, or whatever you need to feel. Find healthy ways to share your feelings and express yourself, such as talking with friends or writing in a journal.
- Recognize that your life has changed. You may feel less engaged with work or relationships for some time. This is a natural part of loss and grief.
- Reach out for help. Loved ones may want to give you privacy and may not feel comfortable asking you how you’re doing, so don’t be afraid to ask for their support.” (Canadian Mental Health Association)
Prayer, meditation, and staying close with my friends always help me when I am experiencing grief as well.
I hope you have a blessed week.
