KAREN’S KORNER
Many people have different thoughts toward aging. It is definitely that time of life that will eventually affect us all! And how we perceive it, and approach it, makes all the difference.
I have a dear friend that is 85 years young… She says that she is doing everything in her power to age gracefully. And, she also says that your attitude makes all the difference. And I think I have to agree with her. Because, for being in her 80’s, she certainly has aged gracefully. She still walks a few miles every day. And she has a strong faith in God, and believes that He is the one who is blessing her in her old age. And, I have to agree with that also.
As we read about the aging process, some parts may not be as pleasant as others, but to follow her thought process, it depends on how we look at it.
Ageism is a train of thought in our society today that involves “stereotyping or discriminating against people based on their age and can occur both in the workplace and in your personal life. Ageism can be directed at older adults and young people alike. However, our culture tends to glorify youth, so older adults are more often the victims of age-based discrimination and negativity.” (HelpGuide.org.)
Wow, many in our society immediately make the assumption that old people cannot do anything anymore and they need to be in a rocking chair, quietly passing their lives away!
That is so far from the truth. Seniors are wells of knowledge, the greatest generation in this lifetime, and are full of advice and ideas that would make your head swim. They just need the chance to continue to live and share with the younger generation in any way and any time they can.
How we look at aging is indeed an attitude! It can be positive or negative, but I hope we consider the positive side.
Attitude is defined as “a mental position with regard to a fact or state! It involves a specific disposition that combines factors like beliefs, opinions, moods, and emotions.” (Merriam-Webster)
It’s basically how you look at something.
