Karen’s Korner: What are your greatest worries after turning eighty?

by Minden Press-Herald

Karen’s Korner,

When the question was posed to eighty-year olds the answers were much the same. The question: “What are your greatest worries after turning eighty?

From across the various resources, these were the top five answers given!

  1. Serious illness – As we age our bodies tend to break down, and often it is difficult to fight off illness, injury, and other difficulties. It’s important to take care of our bodies as best we can. Exercise, proper diet, regular doctor visits, and prevention.
  2. Fixed incomes after retirement – Financial planning and careful spending will help, even after retirement.
  3. Their loved ones – So many times, families are not as close as they once were. Children move away from home. The older family members need contact and visits as often as possible. Communication is so important.
  4. Well-being and mobility issues – Driving has become a problem, getting to the grocery store, shopping, doctor appointments, getting to and from needs to be addressed for the senior in this situation.
  5. Hearing and sight loss – This makes it difficult and makes daily life harder to navigate.

There are others as well, but these were the top five according to the combined resources. If you have further questions, please feel free to contact the Webster Parish Council on Aging, here in Minden, at 1482 Sheppard Street!  318-371-3056.
