SIBLEY – The Lakeside Warriors are looking for their first win of the season Friday night at home against the St. Mary’s Tigers.
The Warriors (0-4) may not be in the win column yet, but they’ve been close against Ringgold and Lincoln Prep. In each loss, with the exception of last week’s blowout at the hands of perennial power Ouachita Christian, the Warriors have lit up the scoreboard.
Lakeside’s first-year head coach Jason Martin isn’t reading too much into last week, choosing to focus on the present and what the Warriors can do against the Tigers.
“As a coaching staff we thought it best to just forget about last week,” Martin said. “We didn’t even show that film to the kids, we told them that’s in the past and we’re starting a brand new season this week. I think the kids have responded well too that.”
St. Mary’s made an appearance in the Superdome last season, but lost much of that team to graduation. The Tigers like to distribute the ball to different playmakers, opting for a spread approach while on offense.
“They’re a little down this year,” Martin said. “They run the football well and then they’ll get in the spread and throw it around. We’ll have to play much better than we have on defense.”
While Lakeside is on offense, Martin thinks his team might have some advantages through the air this week.
“They have some pretty decent linebackers and lineman,” Martin said. “I think we can hurt them a little bit in the secondary though. We’ll try to get going early with some short passes. That’s really been our strength this year.”
The Warriors will go for win No. 1 at 7 p.m.
