Speaker of the House Mike Johnson’s office, along with State Senator Adam Bass’ office, recognized the bravery of Sgt. Aaron Barnes of the Webster Parish Sheriff’s Office and Sgt. Reece Tewell of the Minden Police Department. The officers were honored for their actions on January 30, 2024, when Barnes was struck by a vehicle while assisting a stranded motorist on U.S. Highway 371 north of Dixie Inn.
Barnes was hit by a vehicle while directing traffic, propelling him over the hood of a wrecker preparing to tow a stalled vehicle. Tewell arrived at the scene and provided emergency medical assistance, credited with saving Barnes’ life. Using items from a medical kit, Tewell managed to stop the blood flow from a four-inch deep, seven-inch long gash until further medical help arrived. Barnes also suffered a serious cut to his forehead, a broken tailbone, broken hip, fractured ankle, and road rash.
In recognition of his heroic actions, Tewell was honored with a Life Saving Award presented by Parker on behalf of the Webster Parish Sheriff’s Office earlier this month.
“We are thankful for their service to their respective communities and their dedication to give their very lives in service of the public,” the Minden Police Association said on its Facebook page.
