Letter: Trump was wrong to say what he did about Reiner

To the Editor:

Hey, everybody makes mistakes – says the wrong thing at the wrong time. I’m as guilty as anybody in that regard. The old adage about not saying anything if you can’t say something nice seems to be lost in today’s world.

What Trump said about Rob Reiner was just wrong, wrong, wrong. Everybody knew Reiner’s politics. It didn’t mean you had to trash him on the air after he and his wife were murdered.

Some would say that was “delivering a low blow” and not worthy of someone who holds the highest office in the land.

I’d like an apology so my grandkids can hear when it’s time to sincerely apologize. But he won’t. Never does. It’s high time he learned how.

What Trump really needs is a filter. Everybody needs one. I married one. Someone who puts their arm on my shoulder and tells me, “Look, you might think that, but don’t you dare say that out loud, or write that, because it’s sure to hurt someone’s feelings.” To which I usually respond with, ‘You think so?”

One shouldn’t speak or write when you’re mad or feeling mean. Wait until you can say something nice. It’s okay to keep one’s thoughts to oneself – rather than hurt someone’s feeling and later have to apologize.

But then again, sometimes you have to call a spade a spade – call someone out – speak truth to power, as they say – no matter their rank – and say, in this case, what you said was downright mean. Then be prepared to face the backlash you’ll get – that’s okay – but in your heart, if you know you’re right – stand by your statement!

This is one of those times…
