Please join your Webster Parish Libraries – Springhill Branch along with the Farm of Cultural Crossroads and the City of Springhill for a Little Free Library Community Paint Party. The party is scheduled for Saturday, September 30, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, at Springhill City Park.
The construction of Little Free Libraries has become creative, and many have upcycled their materials to make these eye-catching homes for books. From top to bottom, your Little Free Library was designed, built, and prepped by Webster Parish Libraries staff member, Kelly Gamble. “Kelly Gamble has been with WPL for over twenty-seven years and began working for the library system when he was only sixteen years old. Kelly maintains all seven of our library facilities across the parish with his excellent craftsmanship and trade skill knowledge,” said Savannah Jones, Director for Webster Parish Libraries. “Kelly is a huge asset to our library system as he works behind the scenes to keep our branches operating. His experience and willingness to go above and beyond make him irreplaceable. We are thankful for Kelly and his constant contributions to our library system.”
Borrowing a book can spark interactions and create a sense of camaraderie, strengthening community bonds and enhancing the overall well-being of neighborhoods, so finding the perfect location was key. “I thought the Springhill City Park was the best location to place the new Little Free Library because the park is located in the heart of Springhill, and it serves as a perfect, centralized location. The Little Free Library provides the community with 24/7 access to literature by allowing visitors to take a book and leave a book,” said Renee McCluskey, Branch Manager for Webster Parish Libraries – Springhill Branch.
Little Free Libraries have transcended their physical form to become symbols of generosity, connection, and the enduring power of literature. In a time when technology can sometimes isolate us, these small structures remind us of the joy that can be found in sharing stories and fostering community bonds. “Cultural Crossroads is thrilled to again work with our library system to provide another LFL to the City of Springhill,” said Elaine Eaton with Cultural Crossroads of Minden. “Partnerships like these make our community more vibrant, and we couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity. We are excited to see the community come together to create a unique work of art,” said Eaton. “This installation is unique because it’s both a service to the community and a piece of art wrapped into one!” Elaine Eaton has served as president of Cultural Crossroads since 2020 and has been a contributing member since 2007. After graduating with her master’s degree in communication arts and returning to Minden, Elaine joined Cultural Crossroads as a volunteer in 2011. She is passionate about promoting the arts in Webster Parish.
Sparking a sense of wonder, Little Free Libraries inspire us to embrace the magic of books and become active participants in creating vibrant, thriving communities. “The addition of the Little Free Library in Springhill by the Webster Parish Library is much appreciated and needed. This addition will add to an already community-involved library here in Springhill. The citizens of Springhill have pride in our library and our Webster Parish Library system,” said Ray Huddleston, Mayor of Springhill.
Everyone is invited to add a bit of magic and color! Help bring this project to life by “leaving your mark” on your Little Free Library with your handprint. Paint, clean-up supplies, information bags, music, crafts, snacks, and bottled water will be provided. Please join us Saturday, September 30th, beginning at 10:00 AM.
