In this week’s edition of the Minden Press-Herald, you will find a public notice from the Louisiana Secretary of State listing inactive voters in Webster Parish. The same list is also available on our website.
Public notices are not always the most exciting part of the newspaper, but they are often among the most important. This one certainly qualifies.
If your name appears on the inactive voter list, it does not necessarily mean you cannot vote. It typically means there has been a change in your registration status, perhaps due to a returned piece of mail, an address discrepancy, or inactivity in recent elections. However, if no action is taken, an inactive status can eventually lead to removal from the voter rolls.
That is why it is so important to check the list.
Take a few minutes to look through it. Make sure your name is not there. If you see the name of a family member, neighbor, or friend, give them a call or send them a text. Let them know so they can take the necessary steps to confirm or update their registration.
Voting is both a right and a responsibility. It is one of the most direct ways we shape the future of our community, our state, and our nation. We often say that every vote counts. That is not a cliché. It is reality. Many local elections are decided by slim margins, sometimes by just a handful of votes.
This year, there are several important elections on the horizon. Local offices that directly affect our schools, infrastructure, law enforcement, and quality of life will be on the ballot. Beyond that, state and national races will also demand our attention. The decisions made in these elections will impact everything from tax policy to education funding to economic development.
We cannot afford to sit on the sidelines.
It is easy to become discouraged by national headlines or political noise. But at its core, voting is about something very simple. It is about having a voice. It is about participating in the process that governs our daily lives. It is about making sure that the people who represent us reflect the will of the community.
If you have moved recently, changed your name, or simply have not voted in a while, now is the time to confirm your status. The Louisiana Secretary of State’s website makes it easy to check your registration and make updates if needed. You can also contact the Webster Parish Registrar of Voters for assistance.
An informed and engaged community does not happen by accident. It happens when citizens pay attention, stay involved, and take action.
So take a moment this week. Check the inactive voter list. Help someone else do the same. Make a plan to vote in the upcoming elections.
Your voice matters. Let’s make sure it is heard at the ballot box.
