Man killed in Louisiana after car crashed into horse

by Associated Press

HAMMOND, La. (AP) — Louisiana State Police say a man is dead after his car struck a horse on a state highway.

News outlets report 21-year-old Javonte Lamone Johnson was killed early Sunday. Police said in a news release he was ejected from his car when it overturned after hitting a horse in an eastbound lane of a highway in Tangipahoa Parish.

Police said Johnson braked and swerved in a failed effort to avoid the horse. The impact damaged the windshield and roof of the car, which ran off the roadway. The driver was not wearing a seatbelt.

Investigators were awaiting blood test results to determine if drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Police did not say if the horse was badly injured or killed.
