Men’s college basketball: Jackson State pulls away from GSU in second half

GRAMBLING — Grambling State University suffered a 65-50 setback to Jackson State on Saturday afternoon on Willis Reed Court at the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

In what was a close game in the first half, got away from GSU (6-15 overall, 3-5 SWAC) in the second half. Grambling State shot 44.4 percent from the floor in the opening period, but struggled in the second half, connecting on just 18.8 percent of its attempts in the second half. 

Kintavious Dozier was the leading scorer for GSU, posting 14 points with three rebounds, an assist and a steal. 

In the first half, Grambling State worked its way to a 17-11 lead with 12:17 on the clock. Jackson State jumped in front 23-22 with just over six minutes remaining until halftime. JSU carried a 37-33 lead into the break. 

Jackson State (6-15, 6-2 SWAC) opened the second half with an 8-2 run to stretch its lead to double-digits, 45-35. 

Grambling State was never ever to kick its offense back into gear from that forward. After Emareyon McDonaldknocked down a jumper to make it a 49-44 game with 10:40 to play, GSU only scored three more buckets from field, going 3-of-18 down the stretch. 

Jackson State was paced by Daeshun Ruffin who scored 20 points with five rebounds, four assists and three steals. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Grambling State shot 30.5 percent from the field (18-of-59) and 25.9 percent (7-of-27) from three-point range. GSU was 7-of-11 at the free throw line (63.6 percent). 
  • GSU grabbed 38 rebounds.
  • Grambling State committed 13 turnovers. 
  • GSU scored 13 bench points, 12 points off turnovers, 11 second chance points, 10 points in the paint and seven fastbreak points. 
  • Jackson State shot 44.8 percent from the floor (26-of-58) and 27.3 percent from behind the arc (3-of-11). JSU was 10-of-14 at the charity stripe (71.4 percent) 
  • Jackson State pulled down 40 rebounds.
  • JSU committed eight turnovers.
  • Jackson State scored 36 points in the paint, 11 points off turnovers, 10 second chance points, nine bench points and four fastbreak points.

Grambling State returns to action Monday when the Tigers welcome Alcorn State to the Hobdy Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
