Small Business Saturday puts focus on local shops

There is no need to leave town to satisfy your shopping desires this Thanksgiving weekend. The best deals will be right here in Webster Parish.

Small Business Saturday happens nationwide on Nov. 25, sponsored by American Express and Fedex, with locally-owned small businesses gearing up their best deals for the hometown folks.

The event began in 2011, starting locally with Bobbie’s Hobbies before quickly expanding to Main Street shops in the following years.

“Shop Small is an event for the customers in both Minden and nationally,” Elaine Eaton of Bobbie’s Hobbies said. “We hope everyone is going to come out and show their support by stuffing this year’s stockings with gifts from local businesses. You’ll be giving a gift to everyone on your list, as well as the community, and ensure your taxes are spent right where you live.”

Participating shops will feature one day only specials to help locals check off everything on their Christmas list.

Passports can also be picked up or turned in at Finders Keepers (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.), Heavenly Treasures (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.), Merle Norman (10 a.m. – 5 p.m.) or the Broken Bean (2 – 5 p.m.). This no purchase scavenger hunt will enter you into a drawing for prizes like gift certificates, shop small bucks and much more. Each Nov. 25 receipt from a participating business is an additional entry, so be sure to save your receipts and write your name and phone number on the back to turn into one of the welcome centers before 5 p.m.

Drawings will be held at the Broken Bean at 5:30 p.m.
