Minden advances to quarterfinals with win over West Ouachita

by Minden Press-Herald

The Lady Tiders cruised into the quarterfinals of the 4-A state playoffs with a 65-36 win over West Ouachita on Monday night in Minden.

“I thought it was a complete performance,” Minden head coach Jacob Brown said. “Definitely a confidence-booster for our girls.”

West Ouachita threw a number of different looks at the Tiders on both ends of the floor, but Minden was able to adjust to everything the Lady Chiefs threw at them.

“They are a methodical offensive team,” Brown said. “We got going defensively and that created opportunities for us in transition.”

Minden led 14-6 after one quarter, and went up 29-16 heading into half time.

The Lady Tiders were in control of the game, but still had another gear to hit to show why they are one of the best teams in the state.

“We really got it going in the third quarter,” Brown said. “We began to force the issue on defense and it paid off.”

Minden destroyed the Lady Chiefs with a 17-4 run in the third quarter that put the game to bed.

The Lady Tiders (31-3) were led by Janiya Reed and Derrica Gilbert with 18 points each.

“I thought it was Janiya’s best game for us all season,” Brown said. “Not just offensively. I thought she was incredible on defense for us.”

Destini Powell got going in the second half, scoring 11 of her 13 points in the third and fourth quarters.

Bre Rodgers had 12 points, including to three-point bombs in the first quarter to get Minden going.

The Lady Tiders will play #6 DeRidder on Thursday night at 6 p.m. at The Palace.
