Minden Council secures state funding, advances major infrastructure projects

by Will Phillips

The December Minden City Council meeting saw the council and mayor move through a full agenda, authorizing major funding agreements with the state, greenlighting improvements to Industrial Drive, accepting a land donation to support utility expansion, and accepting personnel promotions and a new hire within the Minden Police Department.

Early in the meeting, the council voted to adopt an ordinance that would amend and reenact a portion of Minden’s Code of Ordinances pertaining to Nuisance Abatement Zones.

“This is to establish a nuisance abatement zone. It defines property, it defines nighttime noise hours, it prohibits public nuisance acts on defined property in a nuisance abatement zone, and preparatory conduct toward a public nuisance,” said Mayor Nick Cox.

Next, the council voted to approve the authorization for the mayor to execute two cooperative endeavor agreements between the City of Minden and the Louisiana Department of Treasury to acquire funds in the amounts of $50,000 and $200,000.

“This is to accept money that was allocated by our good senator, Adam Bass, and our good representative, McMahen…” said Mayor Cox.

“We’re going to allocate these funds to our next item … which is to improve Industrial Drive by the Love’s truck stop, which, we think, will be a great asset to the city and a great relief to the tires.”

As such, the council also unanimously approved the authority for the mayor to advertise for bids for the Industrial Drive Rehabilitation at Highway 531 Project.

After that, the council gave its approval to Mayor Cox to execute a deed for donation to the City of Minden.

“This is another project that we’ve been working on for a long time. While we’re on the subject, I’ll thank Tyler, our Public Works Director, for all the work on this. The city needs to expand a lift station down by the Robertson subdivision,” said Mayor Nick Cox.

“This not only serves that subdivision, but it also serves a lot of the Industrial Drive businesses. In order to really expand it, the lot size that we have right now is too small. This gives the city and me the authority to accept a donation from an adjoining property owner that would allow us to expand the Robertson Lift Station.”

The council also voted to approve the promotions of three Minden Police Officers from the rank of Police Officer First Class to the rank of Police Sergeant, with the ones receiving promotions being Cadyn O’Connor, LaDarrius Joseph, and Jordan Greer. The council also approved the hiring of  KenDale Booker as a full-time Police Officer.

Minden City Council meetings are held on the first Monday of each month at 6 PM at the Minden Civic Center. Meetings are open to the public and, for those who cannot attend in person, are also livestreamed on the City of Minden’s Facebook page and YouTube channel, both titled “City of Minden.”
