New signs, updated traffic patterns aim to improve safety at J.A. Phillips ahead of school year

New traffic signs and revised car line procedures were put in place Thursday, August 6, as local officials worked to improve safety and traffic flow around J.A. Phillips Elementary School before students returned to class.

The effort was a collaboration between the Webster Parish School Board, the City of Minden, and the Minden Police Department.

Crews installed several new signs around the J.A. Phillips Elementary campus reminding motorists not to block intersections or driveways while waiting in pickup and drop-off lines. Officials said drivers who disregard the signs may be cited.

The new traffic measures come as J.A. Phillips welcomes additional students this year following the reassignment of former J.L. Jones Elementary students. Beginning this school year, second-grade students who previously attended J.L. Jones will attend J.A. Phillips, while third-grade students will attend E.S. Richardson Elementary School.

School officials have also announced new traffic patterns for parents dropping off and picking up students at J.A. Phillips.

For Pre-K students, vehicles should begin on Woods Street before turning onto Jordan Street. A staff member will meet parents at the intersection of Jordan Street and Durwood Drive and direct traffic from that point. Pre-K drop-off begins at 7:40 AM, and afternoon pickup begins at 2:35 PM.

Parents of kindergarten through second-grade students should enter the car line from Joel Street, continuing to the intersection of McMullen Street and Durwood Drive, where staff members will direct vehicles. Drop-off for kindergarten through second grade begins at 7:15 AM, and pickup begins at 3 PM.

School officials noted that all students are considered tardy after 8 AM.

Parents seeking additional information about pickup and drop-off procedures are encouraged to contact J.A. Phillips Elementary School. Maps outlining the updated traffic patterns are available below.
