Springhill Steak cookoff challenge ends in shaved heads

SPRINGHILL – The 12th annual Piggly Wiggly Steak Cookoff last month went off without a hitch, raising over $26,000 to be donated to St.Jude Children’s Research Hospital. In the process, it cost three Kenyan Enterprises employees a little more than they had anticipated.

Prior to the cookoff, an agreement was made between Mark Lowery, David Scruggs, and Bobby Vidrine. Lowery said that if they raised $10,000 he would shave his head, then in an effort not to be outdone, Scruggs said if $15,000 was raised he would shave his head as well. Finally never imagining it would actually happen, Vidrine agreed to shave his head if they raised at least $20,000.

As promised, on Saturday afternoon, all three of these men lived up to their word, having their heads shaved in front of a live audience.

Assisting with their new hairdos was Dakota McGill, a St. Jude cancer survivor and junior at North Webster High School.

McGill was first diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 5. He relapsed at the age of 10 and had to have a bone marrow transplant.

“They [St.Jude] have been nothing but a blessing to us,” said Dakota’s mother Pamela McGill. “They always gave us answers as quickly as possible, along with words of encouragement. It’s an amazing place with a lot of good people.”

The video of this event can be viewed at the Springhill Main Street Facebook page.
