Out of the Darkness Walk to raise suicide prevention awareness in Shreveport

by Minden Press-Herald

The Northwest Louisiana Out of the Darkness Walk will be held Saturday, October 18, at 9:00AM at Betty Virginia Park to raise funds and awareness for suicide prevention.

The annual event, organized in partnership with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), draws participants from across the region to honor loved ones lost to suicide and support those affected by mental health struggles. The walk includes music, activities, a butterfly release, refreshments, a silent auction, and a 0.9-mile walk through the park.

Last year’s event drew nearly 300 participants and raised more than $26,000. Organizers have set a goal of $35,000 and 450 participants for this year’s walk. Funds raised will support AFSP’s research, advocacy, education, and community programs.

Christie Waldrop, this year’s event chair, said the walk carries a deeply personal meaning for her. “I lost my younger brother Steven Harville in 2020 and my friend Melissa Garcia in 2021, both to suicide, so this cause is very personal and important to me,” Waldrop said.

The walk is family-friendly and free to attend. Donations are tax-deductible, and registration is available online at afsp.org/nwla.

The event coincides with National Suicide Prevention Month, observed each September to highlight prevention resources and reduce stigma surrounding mental health.

Betty Virginia Park is located at 3901 Fairfield Ave. in Shreveport.
