Pack the Bus Event Returns for the 10th Year, Seeking Donations to Support Students in Webster Parish

by Amber McDown

The highly anticipated annual “Pack the Bus” event is set to take place this Friday, July 28, from 4 PM to 8 PM, and Saturday, July 29, from 8 AM to noon. Volunteers will gather in the parking lots of both Minden and Springhill Walmarts to collect essential school supplies for local students in need. This campaign aims to ensure that every student is equipped for academic success as they gear up for the 2023-24 school year.

The “Pack the Bus” initiative, now in its 10th year, has been a resounding success, thanks to the overwhelming support from generous donors. Various local businesses have already stepped forward to contribute to this noble cause, but organizers emphasize that there’s still time for other enterprises to participate and make a difference in the lives of Webster Parish students.

The supplies needed for the upcoming school year cover a range of items, including pens, notebooks, pencils, loose-leaf paper, paper towels, Kleenex, Clorox wipes, highlighters, and sleep mats. Cash donations are also welcome and appreciated, and the organizers are actively accepting sponsorships from individuals and corporations.

Ursula Hullaby, the Safe Schools coordinator and community liaison, stressed the significance of this campaign, stating, “The cost of required school supplies and uniforms can be overwhelming for many of our families. They depend on our assistance in preparing their children for the upcoming school year. Our goal is to ensure that every student has what they need to focus on their academic success.”

Donated supplies will be distributed during the upcoming Back to School Bash, which will celebrate its 15th year. The event is scheduled to take place on Monday, August 7th, from 9 AM to 2 PM at Webster Junior High School and the CAC building in Springhill. This year’s Back to School Bash will return to an in-person format after two years of being conducted as a drive-thru event due to COVID-19 restrictions. Organizers are thrilled to engage students in a day of fun while providing them with essential supplies for the upcoming academic year. The event promises lots of giveaways and treats for the attendees.

To make the Pack the Bus campaign and the Back to School Bash a success, the organizers seek corporate sponsorships and additional volunteers. Ursula Hullaby expressed her gratitude to the community for their unwavering support over the past fourteen years, which has enabled students across the parish to start school with the supplies they need.

Individuals or businesses interested in becoming sponsors or volunteers can contact Ursula Hullaby at 318-377-7052 ext. 228. The sponsorship options range from the Bronze Sponsorship, with a minimum contribution of $200, up to the Premium Sponsorship, for donations over $700. All contributions are tax-deductible under 501c(3) guidelines.

The “Pack the Bus” event and the Back to School Bash serve as vital campaigns, fostering a sense of community and supporting the education of young minds in Webster Parish. With the continued support of local businesses and compassionate individuals, organizers are optimistic about achieving their goals for the 2023-24 school year. Together, they aim to make a significant and positive impact on the lives of students, ensuring a brighter future for all.
