Special to the Minden Press-Herald
Because Breast Cancer Awareness is one of the initiatives of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, the Iota Rho Omega Chapter recognized those members in their chapter who are breast cancer survivors during their October meeting. Survivors present received a “Pink Survivor Sash” to wear during the meeting and a special gift bag. All other members in attendance received a gift bag containing information about precautions and preventative measures to take against the most common cancer for women. The sorority members also received information from the chapter’s Women’s Health and Wellness Chairman, Mary D. Armwood, concerning statistics about the disease, the importance of yearly mammograms, monthly self-examinations, and how to be proactive in detecting the disease. The members also had the opportunity to examine a breast model that contained the lumps associated with being an early sign of breast cancer.
Additionally, the sorority will be presenting the Susan B. Komen Foundation with a check for $150 in their ongoing fight against women’s breast cancer.
