It’s hard to believe it has been 20 years since Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf Coast, devastating New Orleans and much of south Louisiana. The images from that time are forever etched in our memories—families stranded on rooftops, levees breached, entire neighborhoods underwater. It was one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in U.S. history, claiming more than 1,800 lives and displacing over one million people.
But in the wake of such unimaginable loss, something else emerged. Something powerful. The spirit of neighbor helping neighbor. And here in Minden and across Webster Parish, we saw that spirit shine brighter than ever.
When evacuees poured into our area, we didn’t hesitate. We opened the doors to the Minden Recreation Complex and transformed it into a temporary shelter. Local churches stepped up to offer space, meals, clothing, and comfort. Families opened their homes to complete strangers. Volunteers lined up to donate supplies, offer transportation, and simply be present for those who had lost so much.
This wasn’t just emergency response. It was compassion in action. It was hospitality at its finest—the kind of hospitality we in north Louisiana are known for.
Some of those evacuees found more than shelter here. They found community. They found safety. They found a new beginning. And some chose to stay, making our corner of the state their permanent home. They became part of the fabric of our community, enriching our neighborhoods and reminding us of the beauty that can rise from the ashes.
While we all hope that our state never faces another disaster of Katrina’s magnitude, we can take pride in knowing that when the call comes, we will respond. Because that’s who we are. We show up. We serve. We care.
As we remember the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, let us honor those we lost, celebrate those we helped, and recommit ourselves to being a community that leads with heart.
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” – Galatians 6:2
