SHREVEPORT — A Shreveport cardiologist is running for the congressional seat representing northwest Louisiana.
Trey Baucum, a Republican who has never held elected office, announced his candidacy Wednesday for the 4th District seat.
The News-Star reports Baucum described himself as “a conservative in belief and principle.” In a statement, he talked of balancing budgets, cutting government spending and limiting government’s size.
Though Baucum is the first to officially announce his candidacy, others are soon expected to follow. Republican incumbent John Fleming isn’t seeking re-election in November, instead running for the U.S. Senate.
Baucum says he was inspired to run by the failed government response he saw as a volunteer in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and by what he considers excessive government regulations when his mother and brother opened a restaurant.
