Small Business Saturday highlights local shops in Minden

Small Business Saturday, observed on November 30, brought attention to local businesses in downtown Minden despite lower-than-expected turnout. While the sunny day offered pleasant conditions, chilly temperatures appeared to keep some shoppers away, leaving many business owners hoping for larger crowds.

Stephanie Barnett, president of the Greater Minden Chamber, noted that the weekend brought positive results for local businesses. “Black Friday and Shop Small Saturday had our local businesses seeing a boost in foot traffic and sales. Through the Chamber’s social media, we shared a number of our local members’ sales and discounts for the weekend. We know some of our local businesses are continuing their sales through this week,” Barnett said.

Small Business Saturday, established in 2010, is held annually on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. The nationwide event is designed to encourage holiday shoppers to support small, locally-owned businesses, boosting local economies and fostering job creation.

The day celebrates the vital role small businesses play in communities across the country. By shopping locally, residents help sustain vibrant, diverse neighborhoods and keep dollars circulating within their community.

Barnett urged shoppers to continue supporting local businesses throughout the season. “We encourage everyone to keep up the momentum to shop and dine local as much as possible this holiday season. Let’s boost our economy and keep our small businesses thriving,” she added.

Although participation this year fell short of some expectations, the event still provided an opportunity for residents to engage with local merchants. Business owners remain optimistic that their unique offerings and personal service will continue to attract shoppers in the weeks ahead.

Shoppers are reminded that every purchase at a small business has a meaningful impact on the community, helping to create a thriving local economy and supporting the entrepreneurs who keep Minden vibrant.
