MINDEN, La.—According to CE Noticias Financieras English, published on January 14, 2025 “During the summer solstice, the Sun reaches its highest point in the sky at noon, resulting in the day with the most daylight hours of the year. It is an astronomically significant event because it marks the beginning of summer in scientific terms. From this day on, the days begin to gradually shorten until the winter solstice, also known as the equinox, which is the shortest day of the year. It also has an impact on climate and agriculture, as the long hours of sunlight favor plant growth and food production.
Celebrations and traditions during this astronomical event
The summer solstice has been celebrated in various ways throughout history. In ancient Rome, the festival of Vestalia was celebrated in honor of Vesta, the goddess of home and family.
In Scandinavia, the summer solstice is known as Midsommar and is celebrated with dancing, singing and outdoor feasting. In North America, indigenous peoples also have their own traditions and ceremonies to honor this special day.
Today, many people continue to celebrate the summer solstice with outdoor activities such as picnics, hikes and bonfires as a time to connect with nature, reflect on the cycle of the seasons and enjoy the warmth and light of summer.”
For those who practice yoga it is traditional to participate in a Summer Solstice yoga practice 108 Sun Salutations to welcome the summer, no one in attendance is expected to complete 108 sun salutations but there will be opportunities to practice yoga throughout the event. Local yoga teachers Kathyrn Sutka and Elaine Eaton will lead attendees in a yoga practice. You can also find Kathryn on facebook by searching “Yoga In The Village.” This event is free to all members.
