BATON ROUGE — Louisiana taxpayers have reimbursed more than $69,000 in legal fees paid by a super PAC supporting Republican U.S. David Vitter for governor.
The Fund for Louisiana’s Future challenged the constitutionality of a Louisiana law limiting contributions in federal court last year and won. The state was required to pay the political action committee’s legal expenses.
The Advocate reports payment by Louisiana’s self-insurance program showed up on the PAC’s campaign finance report.
The Fund for Louisiana’s Future objected to a state law capping individual contributions to PACs at $100,000 for each four-year election cycle, saying that unconstitutionally limited free speech. A federal judge agreed.
The $69,336 in legal costs paid by the state are less than the nearly $150,000 the super PAC sought. That figure wasn’t approved by the court.
