Tragic Crash Claims Lives of Two Saline Residents in Bienville Parish

by Minden Press-Herald

A three-vehicle collision on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, at approximately 6:30 p.m. along LA Hwy 9 at the Bienville/Natchitoches Parish line has left a community reeling with grief. Louisiana State Police Troop G commenced an investigation into the crash, which resulted in the deaths of 82-year-old Clois Williams and 78-year-old Mary Williams, both residents of Saline.

Preliminary investigations by Troopers revealed that a 2005 Toyota Tacoma, operated by C. Williams, was heading southbound on LA Hwy 9 when an unforeseen obstacle blocked the road. A large tree unexpectedly uprooted and collapsed across both lanes of the highway, leading to a collision with the Toyota. Two other vehicles also collided with the fallen tree in the aftermath.

C. Williams and his passenger, M. Williams, were both unrestrained at the time of impact, resulting in fatal injuries. Upon arrival at the scene, responders from the Bienville Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced both individuals deceased. The drivers of the other two vehicles involved sustained minor injuries and were treated at the scene. While impairment is not suspected, standard toxicology samples were collected for analysis as part of the ongoing investigation.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of seat belt usage in vehicles. Despite the inherent dangers of motor accidents, statistics consistently demonstrate that properly wearing seat belts can significantly decrease the likelihood of severe injury or death. Louisiana law mandates the use of seat belts for all occupants of a vehicle, regardless of their seating position, emphasizing its critical role in safeguarding lives during emergencies.

Troop G’s investigation into this crash continues, as authorities work to ascertain all contributing factors. In 2024 alone, Troop G has been called to investigate three fatal crashes, resulting in the loss of four lives.
