Two arrested after disturbance at Minden apartment complex

by Minden Press-Herald

Two men were arrested late July 3 following a disturbance call at an apartment complex on Lee Street, according to the Minden Police Department.

At approximately 11:35 PM, officers were dispatched to the 300 block of Lee Street, known as Mt. Calm Hamlet, in reference to a disturbance reported on the third floor. Upon arrival, officers heard multiple voices engaged in a verbal altercation coming from an apartment.

Police knocked and announced their presence. When the door was opened, officers made contact with three men identified as Jerry Miller, 67; Carlos Jackson, 50; and Rodney Batton. All three were escorted out of the apartment, frisked for weapons, advised of their Miranda rights, and detained in handcuffs.

During the frisk of Miller, officers observed a plastic bag protruding from the coin pocket of his pants. When questioned, Miller stated the substance was “MOJO,” a synthetic form of cannabis. Officers later confirmed the substance weighed 4.4 grams. A verbal consent to search the apartment was granted by Miller. Officers had already observed a partially smoked marijuana cigarette and a broken glass pipe inside.

A further search led to the discovery of 0.4 grams of crack cocaine located on top of a cigar box in the residence. All three men were checked for active warrants, but none were found.

Miller was placed under arrest for possession of Schedule II (crack cocaine) and possession of Schedule I (synthetic marijuana). Batton was released at the scene.

As Jackson walked away, he began shouting loudly and using profanities, prompting nearby residents to exit their apartments. Due to the public disturbance, Jackson was taken into custody without incident and later charged with disturbing the peace.

Both Miller and Jackson were transported to the Minden Police Department for booking.

All subjects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
