Webster Parish schools to hold public forums before May 4 vote

Voters in Minden will decide on May 4 whether or not to pass a millage rate increase to fund various construction projects throughout School District 6. However, before voters head to the polls, Webster Parish Schools will be holding three public forums to explain the need.

The first community meeting will take place tonight at J.L. Jones Elementary School. The two subsequent meetings will take place Tuesday, April 23 at E.S. Richardson Elementary School, and Thursday, April 25 at Minden High School. All three meetings begin at 6 p.m.

“We want to inform the citizens about this issue,” Webster Parish Superintendent of Schools Johnny Rowland said. “We will have excellent brochures detailing everything at each meeting. Architect Perry Watson will be there as well.”

Watson, of Yeager Watson and Associates, will give a presentation and field questions from the audience.

If passed, the bond will raise approximately $16 million for construction projects, which will be discussed at the community meetings. One of the most prominent projects to be funded by the bonds would be a new field house for Minden High School’s football team. Minden High has been without a permanent facility since 2016 when the old structure was condemned, along with the football stadium.

If passed, property taxes would increase 11 mills within Webster Parish School District 6.
