Glenbrook netters claim victory against Riverfield

by Minden Press-Herald

The Monroe Athletic Club served as host for a non-district, dual match between the Glenbrook Apaches and the Riverfield Raiders.

Girls’ Singles

Amelia Christy continued to be offensive as she defeated one of her formidable opponents in Sophie Heath. “Consistent placement of serves, pace of ground strokes, and limited errors led to a 6-0, 6-2 win,” Glenbrook head coach Wayne Orr said. “Amelia’s athletic ability gives her an edge in each match.”

Catherine Willis, who had earlier teamed with Abigail Gilbert for a doubles’ victory, defeated Madeline Turner 8-5 in a pro set.

“Catherine was in a fairly quick turn-around; battling the heat and her exhaustion, as well as her opponent, she used her will to win and several timely lobs to being victorious,” Orr said.

Boys’ Singles

Schyler Powell defeated Travis Bawls 7-5, 6-3 in the No. 1 matchup.

“After a closely-contested set one, Schyler became more consistent with his serve,” Orr said. “Rawls brings a game to the court that says ‘I am not beating myself; you must earn the win.’ Schyler did just that.”

John Curtis Brown played a No. 2 singles’ match, defeating Caden Christna 8-0.

Boys’ Doubles

John Curtis Brown and Johnny Law Flournoy teamed for a decisive defeat of Nate Stansberry and Alex Durbin by a score of 6-0, 6-1.

“J. C. and Johnny Law make a formidable duo,” Orr said. “They have matured in their games of strategy. I continue to rely on them; their desire to defeat whoever is their opponent is evident during the match.”

Mixed Doubles

Abigail Gilbert and Justin Le were defeated by the Alexa Roberts and Caleb Clark 8-4 in a pro set. “We played the match almost immediately after the girls’ doubles match. Abigail was tired from the beginning. However, Clark’s net play was the deciding edge in the match. Justin ran down shots that seemed to be out-of-reach. Hopefully, in the return match, each of the players will be refreshed,” signed Orr.

Girls’ Singles

Evie Walker ventured into new territory with singles competition. “Evie, a first-year player, became more comfortable as the match progressed. Covering the court by oneself was not readily adopted. However, she adapted the circumstances and played well, as the 6-4, 6-4 score indicates. Evie and her partner combine for a good doubles combo. They will gain valuable experience this year,” added Orr.

Girls’ Doubles

Catherine Willis and Abigail Gilbert teamed for the No. 1 contest vs. Kylie and Caroline Mills. A grueling contest emerged as the Apaches earned a 7-5, 6-3 win.
