Minden Observes National Day of Prayer with Community Gathering

by Will Phillips

On Thursday, community members gathered at a special ceremony to mark the National Day of Prayer, joining millions across the nation in lifting up the country in faith. Led by Mayor Nick Cox and local clergy, the event focused on unified prayer for key pillars of American life: government, military, media, business, education, church, and family.

“The National Day of Prayer has a rich history, first signed into law by President Harry S. Truman in 1952 and later designated by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 as the first Thursday in May. Every president since has issued a proclamation encouraging Americans to unite in prayer,” said Mayor Cox. “Here in Minden, we proudly continue that tradition, joining millions across the country in this sacred act of faith.”

The program included Terry Combs leading the Pledge of Allegiance and a community recitation of the Lord’s Prayer. Reverend Knapp of Mt. Calm Missionary Baptist Church prayed over the government, Pastor Leland Crawford of First Baptist Church lifted up prayers for the military, Pastor Keith Mariott of Minden Presbyterian Church prayed for the media, Father Nicholas Duncan of St. Paul Catholic Church offered prayers for the business community, Pastor Royal Scott of Greater St. Paul Baptist Church prayed for the education system, Pastor Robert Whitaker of Victory Praise & Worship Center prayed over the church, and Reverend Steve Berger of First Methodist Church closed with a prayer for families, asking God to strengthen homes and relationships.

Mayor Cox concluded the ceremony with a message of hope. “Let’s leave here today carrying the hope and peace we’ve received, continuing to pray for one another and for our nation. May the God of hope guide us, and may we reflect His love in all we do.”
