NLTCC hosts youth manufacturing camps to build skills and spark interest in trades

by Amber McDown

Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College (NLTCC) welcomed students ages 12 to 14 to its 4th annual Nuts, Bolts, and Thingamajigs Manufacturing Camp this summer, holding two sessions on the Minden campus from July 14-17 and July 21-24.

The camp offered participants hands-on experience in various skilled trades using the same state-of-the-art equipment as adult learners at NLTCC. Students learned technical skills from instructors in areas such as welding, advanced manufacturing, industrial maintenance, and electrical systems. Campers also worked on Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), practiced on electricity trainers, learned Morse code, and completed projects including building radios and crafting fishing rods.

The program is designed to introduce young people to potential careers in the skilled trades while helping address workforce needs in the manufacturing sector. Students expressed excitement over discovering new interests and gaining practical knowledge through the immersive experience.
