New Orleans man arrested at Walmart on theft, fugitive warrants

by Minden Press-Herald

A New Orleans man was arrested Friday at Walmart on Homer Road after returning to the store where he allegedly stole a motorized bike the previous day, according to Minden police.

Officers identified the suspect as Jermaine Powell, 39. When Powell exited the store, officers stopped him and advised him of his rights before escorting him to the loss prevention office.

Police said a records check revealed Powell had an active warrant through the Hammond Police Department. He was taken into custody without incident inside the store, however, while being escorted to a patrol unit, Powell allegedly threatened to spit on officers and bystanders and stated he was diagnosed with AIDS. Officers reported that he then threatened to harm himself, attempted to use a seatbelt to asphyxiate himself, and struck his head against the interior divider of the patrol car.

EMS was called to evaluate Powell after he sustained head injuries. While waiting for EMS to arrive, police said Powell threatened to throw feces on officers. Upon EMS arrival, he began to calm down and allowed paramedics to transport him to Minden Medical Center for treatment.

Police said that after Powell is discharged, he will be transported to Bayou Dorcheat Correctional Center. He was arrested on a fugitive warrant from the Hammond Police Department and a Minden Police Department warrant for theft. Additional charges may be pursued, according to the report.

All subjects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
