A Veterans Day Comedy Show benefiting local veterans will take place November 8 at El Santito Mexican Restaurant, 507 Main St., beginning at 8 PM.
The event, hosted by the nonprofit organization CannaVetLive, will feature comedians — 75 percent of whom are military veterans — along with food, drinks, local vendors and a silent auction. The auction includes a donated $5,000 trip from Pointer Outfitters. Doors open at 7 PM.
CannaVetLive, a 509(a)2 nonprofit organization focused on veteran wellness, is hosting the comedy show in four states, including Louisiana, as part of its national fundraising series. Funds raised will provide direct housing support to veterans for up to two years as they transition from military to civilian life.
“They trained us for months to be a soldier — it only seems logical to have the same time to learn to be a civilian again,” said Shaunie Haynes, founder and former social worker at the University of Texas at Austin. “Our mission is to ensure that no veteran who has served our country exits the military and is left without a safe and stable place to call home.”
Haynes said the fundraiser will help employ veterans as staff and entertainers, while increasing awareness of veteran-focused organizations such as the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.
CannaVetLive partners with local veteran organizations and veteran-owned businesses to offer comprehensive support, including housing assistance and community-based resources. The organization aims to prevent homelessness during the critical transition period following active duty service.
Admission to the event is free for veterans. Non-veterans can attend for $20, which sponsors a veteran’s participation.
