22 Hands Up hosts health and safety seminar for local youth

by Amber McDown

Nonprofit 22 Hands Up held a Health and Safety Seminar on Saturday, March 21, at the Minden Recreation Complex, offering local youth hands-on training and information about CPR, emergency response, and careers in the medical field.

The seminar, aimed at participants ages 11-18, featured presentations from Tommie Woods of the Ruston Fire Department and Dr. Michael Ulrich of Minden Medical Center.

Woods led a session on emergency services, CPR, and first aid, bringing CPR training dummies for a hands-on demonstration. After explaining proper techniques, he guided participants through performing CPR themselves. He also demonstrated the use of an automated external defibrillator and discussed its role in emergency situations.

Ulrich spoke about opportunities in the medical field, highlighting both clinical and non-clinical careers and the importance of each in supporting patient care. He provided an overview of various career paths and the levels of education required to pursue them.

The event is part of 22 Hands Up’s broader mission to equip youth with practical knowledge and life skills. The organization serves young people in Webster, Claiborne, and Bienville parishes through programs focused on mentorship, financial literacy, leadership development, and overall wellness.

“We want to give kids the information they need to succeed. Whether it be with their health, their finances, or their education, we want to reach out to youth and help them succeed. We’re better together,” said 22 Hands Up Executive Director Darrell Hampton. On June 8, 22 Hands Up will be sponsoring a tour of Northwest Louisiana Technical Community College for 11-18 year olds.
