A Minden man was arrested Sunday, May 3, after police say he pointed a firearm at his former girlfriend during a disturbance in the 600 block of Columbia Street.
Officers were dispatched at approximately 9:10 PM in reference to a disturbance that potentially involved firearms.
According to a Minden Police Department report, officers arriving on scene began gathering information from the victim, who alleged that her ex-boyfriend, Marcus Smith, 26, pointed a gun at her during a verbal altercation.
While officers were speaking with the victim, she pointed out a passing vehicle and stated that Smith was inside. Due to the seriousness of the allegation, officers left the scene and conducted an investigative stop of the vehicle near the intersection of Theus and East streets.
Smith and the driver were detained for officer safety.
After being advised of his rights, Smith reportedly admitted there was a firearm inside the vehicle. Officers also observed a bag of marijuana on the floorboard, and a subsequent search led to the recovery of a Glock 43 handgun from beneath the front passenger seat.
Police then returned to the original scene to continue interviewing witnesses.
According to the victim’s statement, she and Smith had recently ended their relationship and share one child, who was not present during the incident. She told officers she had recently begun seeing another man.
The victim stated Smith arrived at the Columbia Street residence accompanied by several vehicles and multiple people. Upon arrival, Smith and the victim’s new partner became involved in a verbal confrontation. Police said the argument then shifted to Smith and the victim.
During that altercation, the victim alleged Smith began striking her. She responded by throwing a drink at him, and then Smith allegedly pulled out a firearm and pointed it at her.
Police said two additional witnesses were interviewed, and both accounts were consistent with the victim’s version of events.
After completing the investigation, officers arrested Smith on one count of aggravated assault with a firearm.
All subjects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
