Union Museum to host surreal art show, lecture, and blacksmithing class

by Amber McDown

FARMERVILLE — The Union Museum of History and Art is set to host a series of events and educational programs later this month, including a surreal-themed art exhibit and costume reception, a presentation on ancient cypress trees in Louisiana, and a hands-on blacksmithing class.

The museum’s “Fantastic Vizions” exhibit will open Tuesday, May 26, with a Surreal Costume Party reception from 5:30 to 7 PM. The exhibit will remain on display through June 26 and will feature surrealistic works by local artists Garrett Carlson, Lindsay Carraway, the late Rickie Cox, Heather Gill, Pam Hallman, Kelley Kimble, and G. Scott Smith.

Organizers are encouraging guests attending the opening reception to wear imaginative costumes inspired by surreal art and fantastical ideas, although costumes are not required.

The museum will also host Harvey Stern, founder and director of the Louisiana Purchase Cypress Legacy program, on Thursday, May 28, at 5:30 PM. Stern’s presentation, “Old Growth Cypress in Louisiana: Landmarking and Determining Approximate Age,” will highlight more than two decades of research into ancient cypress trees across the state.

According to organizers, the Louisiana Purchase Cypress Legacy program works to inventory, landmark, and encourage stewardship of cypress trees that were already living at the time of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Stern’s presentation will include photographs and findings from his research, including a Bayou D’Loutre cypress estimated to be nearly 1,000 years old.

A blacksmithing class led by veteran blacksmith Cody Livingston is scheduled for Saturday, May 30, from 9 AM to 1 PM. The class will introduce participants to the basics of blacksmithing as part of the museum’s ongoing Folkcrafts series.

Adults interested in the class are asked to pre-register by calling the museum. The registration fee is $40.

The Union Museum of History and Art is located at 211 N. Main St. in Farmerville. For more information on any of the events, call 318-982-8020.
