A summer day camp aimed at mentoring young men and teaching life skills will take place June 15-19 at Webster Junior High School in Minden.
Registration is now open for the Building Bridges of Opportunity Summer Day Camp, organized by Building Bridges of Opportunity Inc. Founder and organizer Reginald Bridges said the camp is designed for boys entering grades 6-9 in Minden and surrounding areas.
The camp will run from 8 AM to 1 PM daily and is limited to 40 participants. Registration will remain open through June 5 or until all slots are filled.
According to Bridges, the camp’s purpose is to help guide young men while they are still developing habits and decision-making skills.
“The purpose of this camp is to help steer these young men in the right direction while they are still teachable,” Bridges said. “They need to know how easy trouble is to get into and how hard it is to get out of.”
Camp activities and lessons will focus on practical life skills, character development, and personal responsibility. Topics will include mental health awareness, effective communication skills, problem-solving and decision-making, hygiene, discipline, respect, and “real life talk sessions.”
Participants also will learn practical skills such as how to tie a tie, change a flat tire, check vehicle fluids, and cook.
Bridges said the camp is intended to be both educational and enjoyable, with fun activities planned throughout the week.
“The camp will be educational and fun,” organizers said in promotional materials. “In focusing on some of these things in a positive way can minimize and, in many cases, prevent disastrous consequences.”
At the conclusion of the camp, organizers hope to take participants on a charter bus field trip if they successfully complete the program.
“This is to let them know that sometimes in life when you do good, or even when you try, people will be more willing to help you,” Bridges said.
The registration fee is $80 per participant.
