Germ Cave draws crowd at Minden library

by Amber McDown

Children and families packed the Minden branch of Webster Parish Libraries on June 2 for the LSU AgCenter’s Germ Cave, one of the featured events of Discovery Camp 2026’s Science Week.

The interactive exhibit teaches participants about proper handwashing, food safety, and the spread of germs through a series of hands-on demonstrations. Children entered the darkened Germ Cave, where black lights illuminated glowing handprints, hanging “germs,” and other displays designed to show how bacteria can spread through everyday contact.

The event was well attended, with children enthusiastically participating in the activities and asking questions throughout the program. Many appeared fascinated by the visual demonstrations and interactive learning opportunities.

The Germ Cave is part of the LSU AgCenter’s Food Safety Educational Tool Box and was created to help educate children and families about foodborne illness prevention in a fun and engaging way.

Discovery Camp 2026 continues throughout June at Webster Parish Libraries with additional science, technology, engineering, and mathematics-themed programs planned across the parish.
