Rainy weather no match for 2026 St. Jude Diamond Open
Rainy weather threatened to disrupt the 2026 Minden St. Jude Diamond Open for the second consecutive year, but thanks in part to the city’s new turf fields, organizers were able to complete the tournament and continue raising funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Held June 20-21 at the Minden Recreation Complex, the annual baseball and softball tournament brought together young athletes, families, volunteers, and supporters for a weekend dedicated to honoring the memory of Stanton Haynes while helping children battling cancer.
Despite periods of rain throughout the weekend, games continued and the event was deemed a success by organizers.
“Despite the rain, with Minden’s new turf fields we were able to play the tournament and it was a great success,” tournament founder Jeff Haynes said. “Thanks to all the volunteers and all the city workers for making it happen. We Swung for a Cure and hit a Homerun!”
The tournament, themed “Swinging for a Cure,” featured youth baseball and softball competition in multiple age divisions. Participants traveled from across the region to compete while supporting the fundraiser’s mission.
The annual event is held in memory of Stanton Haynes, affectionately known by organizers as the tournament’s “Angel in the Outfield.”
“This tournament is more than baseball and softball. It’s about honoring a legacy, supporting families, and helping make a difference for children battling cancer,” Haynes said.
Funds raised during the tournament will benefit St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which provides treatment and conducts research for childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Families receiving care at St. Jude never receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing, or food.
Over the years, the Minden St. Jude Diamond Open has grown into a community tradition, drawing support from local businesses, volunteers, coaches, players, and families who share a commitment to helping children and advancing the lifesaving work of St. Jude.
While storm clouds lingered over the weekend, organizers said the community’s determination to support the cause once again shined through.
