Webster Parish Council on Aging increases suggested donations for meals, homemaker services

by Amber McDown

The Webster Parish Council on Aging has increased its suggested donation amounts for Meals on Wheels and homemaker services beginning July 1, citing rising food and fuel costs.

According to a letter sent to clients dated June 30, the suggested donation for Meals on Wheels increased from $2 to $3 per meal, while the suggested donation for homemaker services increased from $3 to $5.

In the letter, Executive Director Johnny Johnson said the increase was necessary “due to price increases in food products and gasoline.”

Johnson emphasized that the donation amounts are not fees for service and that no eligible client will be denied assistance based on an inability to contribute.

“Our expenses are covered in full by federal, state, and local tax dollars,” Johnson said. “However, the state requires us to publish a donation schedule suggested for each service provided.”

He explained that the Council on Aging is prohibited from charging for services and that a person’s ability to pay is never considered when determining eligibility.

“If they can’t afford a meal, it is provided free of charge,” Johnson said.

According to Johnson, suggested donations allow clients who are financially able to help offset program costs. Funds collected through donations remain with the program for which they were given.

“These donations are an opportunity for the client to share in the expenses if they are able to do so,” he said. “Donations are used in the program they are collected for.”

Clients with questions about the revised suggested donation schedule are encouraged to contact the Webster Parish Council on Aging’s main office in Minden at 318-371-3056.
