Commissioner Tim Temple announces simplified process for military auto insurance discount

by Minden Press-Herald

The Louisiana Department of Insurance (LDI) has simplified the application process to make it easier for eligible military members to receive a 25% discount on the liability portion of their auto insurance premium. This week, Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple issued Bulletin 2026-11, which changes Louisiana regulation governing the application process for the discount. With this change, eligible service members will only need to submit the application form once, instead of annually.

The 25% discount is available to:

  • Active-duty military personnel based in Louisiana;
  • Military reservists based in Louisiana; and
  • Members of the Louisiana Army National Guard or Louisiana Air National Guard.

“The brave men and women serving our country dedicate themselves to protecting the very freedoms that make America great,” said Commissioner Temple. “This law recognizes their service by helping military members save on auto insurance. I made this change with the intent to incentivize more of our service members to take advantage of this significant discount.”

To apply for the discount, download the Louisiana Application Form for Military Discount. After completing and signing the application, submit it to your auto insurance agent or insurance company along with the required eligibility documentation listed on the Application Form.

Active-duty military personnel and military reservists must provide current military orders showing assignment to a duty station in Louisiana. Members of the Louisiana Army National Guard or Louisiana Air National Guard must provide a letter from their commander on official unit letterhead verifying membership.

The 25% discount for service members was established through Act 770 of the 2004 Regular Legislative Session. Insurers may also voluntarily offer the discount to veterans with a VA disability rating of 50% or more and to retired members of the United States Armed Forces, National Guard, Louisiana Army National Guard, and Louisiana Air National Guard. More information is available in LDI Bulletin 2023-04. If you are a veteran or retired service member, please contact your insurance company or agent to see if the discount is available to you.
