Dorcheat-Bistineau Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution’s annual Spring Luncheon was held at the home of Cindy Madden on May 11th. Cindy is enrolled in the DAR Leadership Training Course, and she gave a PowerPoint presentation to share what she has learned about DAR’s mission of historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Luncheon guests were given mini rosebushes in ceramic mugs as favors. Ashln Benamati served as this month’s hostess.
We are excited to welcome Ashln Benamati to our chapter. She is joining through her grandmother Cindy Madden’s DAR application, which will make her a Legacy member. They are descended from John Buchanan who was born in 1724 in Spotsylvania Co., VA. In 1748 John moved to Augusta County, VA, and was one of the first vestrymen of the county. Around 1756, John became a captain in the local militia. Because he was too old to serve in the military during the Revolution, he aided the Virginia colony through civil service as a surveyor. John died 20 April 1790 in Augusta County.
In honor of Memorial Day, chapter members Marguerite Gray and Donna Sutton placed flags on veterans’ graves in 3 cemeteries in Bienville Parish. About 30 flags were placed at Gibsland Cemetery, about 20 at Bear Creek Cemetery, and about 40 at Campground Cemetery.
Members of our chapter participated in the Firefly 5K, which is a national fundraiser sponsored by the DAR Junior Membership Committee. The 5K was virtual, which allowed participants to walk or run whenever they had time. The entry fees went to the Helen Pouch Memorial Fund which provides scholarships, medical aid, and general financial assistance to Kate Duncan Smith DAR School, a school in an isolated area in Alabama.
Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution (1775-1783) is eligible to join Daughters of the American Revolution. Researching your family has never been easier, and DAR members can help you.
