During the January 6, 2023, school board meeting, the board members were sworn in by Judge Jeff Cox for the new year, including the four new members to the board: Debbie Thomas for District 2, Jonathan Guthrie for District 4, Jana Watson for District 6, and Susan Addington for District 12.
The first act of the new board was to approve the motion to appoint Mrs. Frankie Mitchell as District 9 school board member pending the results of the special election. While Mitchell had intended to step down from this position this year, no one ran for the position during the November elections. She volunteered to maintain her position so that her district would have representation until a new board member can be elected.
Next on the agenda was to elect the school board officers for 2023. Charles Strong was elected president with nine votes, and Johnnye Kennon was elected vice president unanimously.
A number of invoices and upgrades were approved which will be detailed in a future article.
This was also the first day of school for students after the winter break. “From most reports, all went well,” said Superintendent Johnny Rowland. “We’re thankful for a good start, and thankful to be back in school.”
The next school board meeting will be on February 6, 2023. The public is welcome to attend.
