Lakeside and Doyline Panthers both put up good fights in their second-round games Thursday night, but ultimately both the Warriors and Panthers saw their seasons come to an end with close losses.
Lakeside, the No. 5 seed, lost to No. 12 Mangham 4-2 at home in a non-select Division IV game. Doyline, the No. 16 seed, dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 1 Choudrant on the road in a non-select Division V game.
Thursday’s results leave Glenbrook as the only Webster Parish team left in the playoffs. The No. 3 Apaches (22-8) host No. 14 Vermilion Catholic (16-11) Friday at 6 in a select Division IV second-round game.
At Lakeside, all the scoring was done in the first two innings and hits were hard to come by.
The Warriors got off to a shaky start as the Dragons scored two in the first without benefit of a hit.
Lakeside tied it in the bottom of the inning.
Eli Musgraves led off with a walk. Bradley Dick then smacked a double to right field and Musgraves scored on an error.
Dick advanced to third on the error and scored on a groundout by CJ Watts.
In the top of the second, Mangham loaded the bases with one out on three consecutive walks.
Gage Hutson’s single then made it 4-2.
Neither team threatened again until the bottom of the sixth.
The Warriors got doubles by Dick and Watts but failed to capitalize on them.
In the top of the seventh, the Dragons put runners at first and second but Jordan Isbell induced a flyout and groundout to end the threat.
Lakeside went down in order in the bottom of the inning on three groundouts.
Isbell turned in an outstanding performance on the mound. He didn’t allow a run in 5 1/3 inning of relief, giving up just three hits and one walk.
Mangham’s Hutson pitched a complete game. He also allowed just three hits and walked one.
Lakeside closed its season 18-14. Mangham (14-19) faces No. 20 Centerville, which upset No. 4 Montgomery 9-5, in the quarterfinals.
At Choudrant, Doyline sophomore Noah Spears, coming off a perfect game in the first round, tossed another gem.
He allowed four hits and walked only one. Choudrant’s run was unearned.
But the Aggies also got outstanding pitching from Bryce McGuire and Landon Hennen. They allowed just three hits and struck out a combined 13.
The Aggies scored the game’s lone run in the bottom of the fourth on a leadoff single, a two-base error and a groundout.
The Panthers’ best scoring chance came in the top of the fourth. Cameron Johnson and Spears led off with back-to-back singles. But McGuire struck out the next three batters.
Austin Arbaugh had Doyline’s other hit.
Doyline finished 10-17. Choudrant (27-4) will host the winner of No. 8 Hicks and No. 9 Bell City in the quarterfinals.
