City of Minden reflects on a year of notable achievements

by Amber McDown

Mayor Nick Cox recently shared a comprehensive overview of the City of Minden’s accomplishments in 2023. Mayor Cox, along with the city council, has steered Minden towards numerous milestones, emphasizing growth and community welfare.

The leadership team in Minden underwent substantial expansion with key appointments, including Tyler Wallace as Public Works Director, Zita Williams as Recreation Director, Taylor Wren as Main Street Director, and Brian Williams as Fire Chief. In April, strategic hiring efforts, supported by Baton Rouge lobbyist Caroline Mladenka and backed by Representative Wayne McMahen and former Senator Robert Mills, secured $1.1 million in capital outlay for critical city projects. Additionally, the City of Minden engaged Manchac Engineering to pursue federal grants for future infrastructure improvements.

Infrastructure improvements were a focal point in 2023. Minden concentrated on road resurfacing projects, ensuring safer and smoother commutes on heavily-trafficked city streets. Through a collaborative endeavor, the city signed an agreement with the State transportation department to install new lights on I-20 at the Sibley Road exit, enhancing safety and visibility for motorists. Overcoming a major challenge on July 30, the City, in collaboration with Entergy and Swepco, successfully rebuilt and updated a power tie, significantly enhancing infrastructure durability. The extension of Minden Airport’s runway, accommodating a parallel taxiway, increased efficiency and safety in airport operations. Investment in a new fire rescue truck ensures the fire department’s preparedness for emergencies. A $130,000 grant from the Delta Regional Authority supports ongoing efforts to develop a comprehensive city strategic plan, guiding future development and growth.

Several improvements contribute to making Minden a more pleasant place to live. Renovations at Ewell Park, High Street Park, and Babb Park aimed to provide safe and enjoyable spaces for children. The condemnation of dilapidated properties contributes to neighborhood revitalization, enhancing overall aesthetics and safety.

In 2023, the community frequently came together to celebrate achievements and support others. On March 4, local Super Bowl Champion JJ Sneed received overwhelming community support for his athletic accomplishments. Collaborating with neighbors, the City successfully raised an impressive $2 million for St. Jude, significantly contributing to the fight against childhood cancer. The Minden Dixie Darlings’ World Series victory was celebrated with a parade, showcasing strong community support for their remarkable achievement. The Minden Minister’s Breakfast played a crucial role in fostering fellowship and strengthening relationships between city officials and local ministers.

As Minden reflects on the accomplishments of 2023, Mayor Nick Cox expresses pride in the city’s achievements and anticipates even greater accomplishments in 2024.
