Mt. Zion CME Church is set to host a commemorative service honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event will take place at 3 PM on January 14, 2024, at the church’s location, 414 East Union Street in Minden.
This year’s theme, “Be the dream…spread hope, courage, & unity,” encapsulates the spirit of the celebration. Dr. Breleisha Gilbert, assistant professor at Grambling State University, will deliver the keynote address during the service.

The commemoration promises a vibrant program, featuring a community choir, participation from youth groups, and contests for the youth, including essay and poster competitions. The event will also acknowledge outstanding community leaders with leadership awards.
The celebration extends into January 15 with a series of activities, including an ecumenical march on MLK Drive at 10 AM, an MLK prayer call at noon (accessible at 1-518-425-1766), and a community symposium via Zoom at 6 PM.
Mt. Zion CME Church invites all choir members and singers to participate in the community choir, enhancing the collective experience. Rehearsals are scheduled for January 9 at 6 PM and January 13 at 10 AM. Those interested can contact Director Barbara Doss for more information.
This commemorative service and accompanying events provide an opportunity for the community to join together in reflecting on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy and fostering hope, courage, and unity for the future.
