The National Weather Service is urging residents to prepare for the upcoming spring severe weather season as Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week for Louisiana kicks off Sunday, February 11th, and runs through Saturday, February 17th.
The 2023 severe weather season in Louisiana saw a significant level of activity, with 34 tornadoes reported statewide, including 14 in Northern Louisiana. Among these tornadoes, two were categorized as strong, registering as EF-2 or higher, while 10 were rated EF-1 and two were EF-0.
With the 2024 spring severe weather season on the horizon, the National Weather Service emphasizes the importance of proactive preparation. Each day of the awareness week is dedicated to specific aspects of readiness.
On Sunday, February 11th, the focus is on creating an emergency plan. Families are advised to discuss and establish communication strategies, shelter plans, evacuation routes, and to update emergency preparedness kits as needed.
Considerations for household-specific needs such as medical requirements, disabilities, language preferences, and pet care are also encouraged. Tailoring emergency plans to accommodate these factors ensures comprehensive preparedness.
As communities across Louisiana brace for the approaching severe weather season, the National Weather Service underscores the significance of early preparation to mitigate risks and safeguard lives and property.
