Louisiana prepares for spring severe weather: National Weather Service encourages readiness

by Minden Press-Herald

Monday, February 12: Severe Thunderstorms

The National Weather Service is urging residents to prepare for the upcoming spring severe weather season as Spring Severe Weather Awareness Week for Louisiana kicks off Sunday, February 11th, and runs through Saturday, February 17th.

When severe weather strikes, swift action is crucial to ensuring safety and minimizing potential harm. Here are essential steps to take:

Stay Weather Ready: Remain vigilant by staying tuned to local news updates or NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts for severe thunderstorm watches and warnings.

At Your Residence: Seek shelter in your designated secure location upon hearing a severe thunderstorm warning. Take your pets with you if time permits.

At Work or School: Avoid windows if a severe thunderstorm warning is issued and damaging winds or large hail are imminent. Refrain from congregating in large open areas like cafeterias, gymnasiums, or auditoriums.

Outdoors: Immediately seek refuge indoors in a sturdy building when severe thunderstorms approach. Sheds and storage facilities do not provide adequate protection. Avoid seeking shelter under trees, as they pose a risk of falling or attracting lightning strikes.

In a Vehicle: While being in a vehicle during severe thunderstorms is safer than remaining outdoors, if time allows, drive to the nearest secure shelter.

By taking these precautionary measures, individuals can enhance their safety and reduce the impact of severe weather events.
