High school baseball: Glenbrook aims for second straight trip to state tournament Wednesday

by Russell Hedges

The Glenbrook Apaches will be looking to advance to the select Division IV semifinals and the state tournament for the second straight season Wednesday.

Standing in the way is No. 3 seed Ouachita Christian (23-6), the defending state champion. First pitch for the quarterfinal game is 6 in Monroe.

The No. 11 seed Apaches (14-10) and Lions (23-6) were scheduled to play late in the regular season but the game was rained out.

Last year, Glenbrook defeated Ouachita Christian 9-1 in the regular season. The Apaches didn’t get a rematch, though, after falling to No. 2 Ascension Catholic 4-0 in the semifinals.

Glenbrook is in its third year in the LHSAA. The Apaches weren’t eligible for the playoffs in 2022.

Glenbrook has come this far despite losing a wealth of talent off last season’s 24-9 team, including Division I signees Hayden Harmon (Louisiana Tech) and Maddox Mandino (Louisiana-Lafayette).

The Apaches got off to a 1-6 start. The have gone 13-4 since then.

Glenbrook played a tough schedule that included five teams that are still in the quarterfinals of their respective divisions — Benton, Claiborne Christian, Dunham, Evangel Christian and Oak Grove.

The Apaches also played District 1-5A champion Captain Shreve, which lost in the second round of the select Division I playoffs, and Parkway, which lost in the second round of non-select Division I.

Glenbrook upset No. 6 seed St. John 8-5 on the road in the second round last week. Ouachita Christian, which finished second to St. Frederick in District 2-1A, defeated No. 14 St. Mary’s 8-3.

Two other parish teams are still alive in the playoffs.

Lakeside (16-14), the No. 5 seed, is scheduled to visit No. 4 DeQuincy (18-9) in a non-select Division IV quarterfinal game Thursday at 5:30.

Lakeside and DeQuincy both received first-round byes. The Warriors defeated No. 12 Logansport 9-1 in the second round, and the Tigers defeated No. 20 Delcambre 12-2.

Minden (25-10), the No. 14 seed, visits No. 6 North Vermilion (20-12) in a best-of-3 non-select Division II quarterfinal series. Game 1 is scheduled for Friday at 6. Game 2 is scheduled for Saturday at noon. Game 3, if necessary, will follow at 3.

Minden has gone the distance in two playoff series. The Tide defeated No. 19 Beau Chene two games to one in the first round and No. 3 Brusly two games to one in the second.

North Vermilion, which had a first-round bye, also needed three games to advance in the second round. The Patriots lost the first game to No. 11 Assumption 5-0 then won the next two 13-1 and 4-3.
